The major forces of attraction that hold atoms and ions together are covalent and ionic bonds, but there are other, weaker forces that operate between different molecules that need to be examined. Frequently students do not understand the distinction between the forces that hold atoms together into a molecule and the forces that attract one molecule to another. It is important to work at this distinction.
